Fast fashion, not the speed walking kind, is going to be the bane of our generation's existence. You can buy whatever you want, when you want, all from your fingertips. But what happens when it doesn't fit or you're not happy with how it looks in person. You might send it back to the online store for a refund, but a lot of the time this won't actually be sold again and is discarded. Fast fashion prioritises cheap and cheerful, over quality and thoughtful. It mass produces items which are highly trend based and likely won’t be worn again next season.
So when you have a big event coming up, you might be tempted to buy something cute online for cheap knowing it won’t matter if you don’t wear it again because it didn’t cost an arm and a leg, but is it costing the earth instead? It's time to rethink event attire and look into what other options we can try.
Renting: There are some great online renting sites like Designer Wardrobe which offer gorgeous formal wear you can rent for your next event. They even offer the option of paying an extra $15 to get a back up dress in case the one you order isn't quite right.
Thifting: If you have the time to invest in op-shopping this is a great route to get yourself an outfit. Gone are the days too when you had to trawl through the racks at the Sallies, there are now plenty of options for online resellers who will have already done the hunting for you.
Borrow from a friend: Your friend might have worn it to her grad ball so why not lend it off her for your cousin's wedding? Borrowing can be closer to home.
Investing in versatile pieces: You can't go past a little black dress, and investing in a piece you can wear to multiple events comes in handy for not only your back pocket but also the planet. Pick items which can be dressed up or down, or paired with tights for the winter. Having key pieces also means you can prioritise local or ethically manufactured, over fast fashion, mass produced items.
Looking fab at your next event doesn’t cost the earth. Fashionable and sustainable can be used in the same sentence, it’s all about resisting the urge to buy with the one-use mindset (unless you’re renting of course). Think about where your clothes are coming from and who is making them, choosing to support ethically produced items and natural fibres where possible.
We love a cute outfit and getting all dressed up for an event, even more so when we’re doing it sustainably!
